Position Summary

The Meal Program Chef is responsible for planning, preparing, and cooking weekly meals for senior lunch on Fridays and SRO family dinner on a weekday and/or Saturdays with the support of a staff/volunteer team of 4-8 additional people. Meals will mostly consist of Chinese dishes and soups and will serve groups of 50-80 people per meal. The Meals Program Chef will assist the Senior Program Coordinator and SRO Program Coordinator to ensure the kitchen and meal service run effectively. The Meal Program Chef will also support the kitchen staff and volunteers with ingredient procurement for each meal. The Meal Program Chef will be responsible for helping to maintain cleanliness in the kitchen and adhering to all food safety standards.

Job Responsibilities

  • Plan and purchase ingredients for meals serving 50-80 participants, 2-3 times per week.
  • Cook and prepare meals, organizing and guiding staff and volunteers to support the process.
  • Adhere to set budgets when planning and purchasing meal ingredients.
  • Kitchen Maintenance
  • Maintain a clean and organized kitchen environment, ensuring it meets all food safety and hygiene standards.
  • Communicate effectively with kitchen support staff and volunteers, fostering a positive and efficient working atmosphere.
  • Participate in staff meetings and ongoing training sessions as required.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds in order to perform essential functions.
  • The role may require occasional physical activities such as sitting, lifting, stooping, crouching, bending, leaning, and kneeling.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of experience in cooking, specializing in Chinese cuisine.
  • Availability for the following schedule:
    • Fridays: 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM
    • Saturdays: 11:30 AM – 8:00 PM
    • One weekday (to be agreed upon): 2:00 PM – 7:30 PM
  • Food Safety Handler Certification (can be acquired after hire).

Preferred Skills

  • Bilingual skills in Cantonese, Mandarin, and/or English.
  • Food Safety Manager Certification (can be acquired after hire).
