Every individual deserves a healthy body, a healthy mind and healthful habits; to be physically and emotionally safe; and to have access to structured and supervised community-based activities.
Yet . . .
- Today the youth in our community are suffering from an obesity epidemic, with one in three being overweight or obese.
- 72% of children living in San Francisco never exercise and only 31% are physically fit.*
- Of 4,000 young people surveyed across the country, less than 40% claimed access to safe places and constructive use of their time. Another 58% reported that they rarely participate in high-quality structured activities.**

The YMCA of San Francisco is making a concerted effort to address these worrisome trends.
“Everyday I thank God and the generosity of other people for helping me keep my son safe, secure and happy.”

PEP- Physical Education Program
80% of San Francisco’s Asian youth never exercise. At the Chinatown YMCA, our PEP program is providing physical education to 1,100 students in Chinatown each week and raising awareness about the importance of healthy lifestyles. The YMCA PEP program helps children and their families engage in physical activity, motor skill development, health and wellness programming, and nutrition education; with an overall focus on healthier lifestyle choices.
“PEP has shown me how to eat a more balanced diet, make better food choices, and even make healthy meals myself.” - S. Louie, Age 15
A Beacon in the Western Addition
Many families living in the Western Addition are at risk of becoming splintered. The Western Addition Beacon Center, operated by the Buchanan YMCA, not only provides quality after-school programming, but also serves as a community center addressing specific needs of this underserved neighborhood. Academic support, college preparation, computer training, arts activities, recreational activities that foster mental and physical health and case management are available on a daily basis for more than 400 youth ages 5 to 17.
The Western Addition has been identified as a consistent “hot spot” of violent youth criminal activity. - SF Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice 2000 Report on Juvenile Crime
Seniors are at the Heart of our Mission
Social isolation, inadequate nutrition and decreased strength and mobility can become serious challenges to the health and well being of our older adults. The Bayview Hunters Point, Mission, Shih Yu-Lang Central, Richmond District, and Stonestown YMCAs offer a variety of programs in their Senior Centers for both physically active and frail older adults.
“Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” – The World Health Organization
For more than 150 years, the YMCA of San Francisco has provided comprehensive programs and services to meet the diverse needs of the Bay Area. Through its 14 locations in Marin, San Francisco and San Mateo counties, the YMCA’s programs have helped generations of individuals and families build healthy spirits, minds and bodies. From swim classes and health programs to senior activities and job-readiness training, the YMCA of San Francisco has long provided the resources that each neighborhood needs. On an average day last year, 19,500 youth were participating in YMCA of San Francisco programs.
