Chinatown YMCA Honors Voluntary Local Hiring Efforts in Capital Project

San Francisco, CA– On Wednesday, December 23, 2009 representatives from the Chinatown YMCA, West Bay Builders, and Chinese for Affirmative Action gathered at 855 Sacramento Street, the site of the YMCA's capital renovation project. The YMCA acknowledged the progress of the capital project and honored the voluntary local hiring efforts of West Bay Builders, with the support of Chinese for Affirmative Action and its partnerships with City Build and Charity Cultural Center. West Bay Builder's local-hire subcontractors include Yums Mechanical, Titan Electric, Egan Plumbing, Peck & Hiller, and Ventura and Metal Set.

For nearly 100 years, the Chinatown YMCA has served thousands of children, youth, families and seniors throughout Chinatown, and has been a cultural epicenter for Chinese Americans in the Bay Area. To continue to meet the needs of the community, the YMCA has undergone a $24 million capital project that includes a renovation of the current 1926 four-story building as well as the construction of a new three-story addition. The project highlights include expanded youth and teen program space, increased family and community space, larger wellness and fitness areas, and a new pool double the prior size. The old YMCA building will be renovated and upgraded to be safe, accessible and more energy efficient. The project is moving along on schedule with plans to open in Fall 2010.
