Description

General Function:

Prevents injury/incidents by maintaining a safe swimming environment in the pool, on the pool deck and surrounding areas. Upholds the highest standards of safety by consistently enforcing pool rules, educating members on aquatic safety, actively participating in mandatory monthly in-services, performing monthly skill check offs, and keeping certifications up to date.

 

Skills and Requirements

Entry Requirement:

1. Minimum 18 years of age.

2. Current YMCA approved first aid certification.

3. Current YMCA approved CPR certification.

4. Current YMCA approved Lifeguard certification.

5. Ability to maintain certification level of physical and mental readiness.

6. Possesses mature judgment and sound decision-making.

7. Have the ability to relate to people in a positive, but firm manner, and interpret YMCA aquatic program philosophy.

8. Must be observant, safety conscious, and able to react calmly and quickly in emergency situations.

 

Essential Functions:

1. Maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, on deck and surrounding areas.

2. Prevents accidents and upholds highest standards of safety by maintaining 10/10 scanning standards, performing no other duties other than lifeguarding while actively lifeguarding, enforcing health and safety standards, and maintaining readiness to respond to an emergency.

3. Plays an actively role in continuing to identify ways to improve safety standards.

4. Participates in regular emergency drills.

5. Consistently enforces all Pool Rules. Educates members on Aquatic Safety.

6. Familiar with all safety protocol and Emergency Action Plan.

7. Responds to emergencies. Provides care and first aid as needed.

8. Maintains records of the pool chemical readings. Takes pool attendance and maintains related records as required.

9. Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, and procedures, including emergency procedures. Completes incident reports as necessary.

10. Provides excellent customer service.

11. Regularly promotes aquatic programs.

12. Rotates to front desk to assist with program promotion, registration, tours, membership sales, and member service.

13. Communicates regularly with aquatic management staff.

14. Attends monthly staff in-service trainings.

15. Performs monthly skill check offs.

16. Keeps certifications up to date.

17. Checks rescue equipment, and promptly report equipment problems.

18. Demonstrate the "Character Counts" values of caring, respect, honesty and responsibility in all your dealings with members, guests, volunteers and fellow staff.

19. Participate in training and abides by the "New Perspectives" guidelines for the YMCA of San Francisco.

20. Educates members about the Strong Communities Campaign.

21. Assists in creating a Community Environment.

22. All other duties as assigned by your supervisor.
