| Solution |
The Chinatown YMCA is helping children learn to take care of their bodies for greater overall health, balance and self-esteem. When Kayla was in the 4th grade, she couldn’t do a sit-up. With a focus on fitness, she was able to work up to 45. Kayla is one of over 1,000 Chinatown youth who have been reintroduced to physical education thanks to the PEP program that brings YMCA instructors into San Francisco public schools. |

The YMCA’s Building Futures Mentoring Program supports families in Chinatown by pairing mentors with families in need. “Meeting my mentor gives me something to look forward to every weekend. I didn’t know I could play basketball or swim , and now I know I can do both. I feel like I have a guardian angel,” said Gerry. Gerry has a mentor at the YMCA along with her two younger siblings. Gerry lives with her siblings and grandparents in a single room above the storefronts of Chinatown |

Gang-related crimes peak between the hours of 4:00-7:00 pm. |

| Solution |
The Chinatown YMCA Teen Center offers youth a better alternative. “The worst case scenario: If not for the Teen Center, I could be on the streets or in a gang,” Gary, an alumni of the Teen Center, knows he can come to the Y as a safe place. The support of the positive influences from YMCA peers and adult leaders has opened Gary to a world outside of Chinatown. Those experiences Gary shared visiting colleges, seeing snow, going camping, giving back to the community and the strong peer relationships he's built along the way, has shown him how one person can initiate change and how it can begin with each of us. |
