Western Addition Safe Haven
The Safe Haven is a comprehensive after-school program for youth ages 10-18. The Center is located is located at Buchanan YMCA and is open Mon.-Fri. from 3-7PM. A second site is located at Hayes Valley Housing Development.
The goals of the program are to provide consistent and structured social activities, academic and recreational activities, to increase the participant's self-esteem and educational attainment, and to create a sense of safety amongst the youth.
In order to achieve these goals and to ensure that each particpant is receiving a quality and well-rounded experience, the Safe Haven:
- Maintains contact with school officials to track the progress of participants in their academic performance,
- Conducts prevention education and life skills workshops that youth plan, and
- Facilitates discussion groups with the youth's peers, program staff and guest speakers from the community.
