Position Descriptions, Youth Programs
Volunteers work closely with participants in the Western Addition Beacon Center, Western Addition Safe Haven, Day Camp, Afterschool Tutors and program committees.
- Enrichment Aide at John Muir Elementary School (K-1st gr.).The Enrichment Aide assists the K-1st gr. Enrichment Leaders in provides a safe and fun environment for the students. S/he helps to engage the students in a variety of activities, including homework time, outdoor play, and art projects. The Aide should be able to adapt to the flexible schedule of the K-1 classroom.
- Homework Tutor John Muir Elementary School. The homework tutor assists’ the students in grades K-5 with their homework. The homework content is usually math, and English/language arts. The tutor is placed in class:K-1st grade, 2-3rd grade, or 4-5th grade. The Enrichment leader of the class may assign one or a small group of students to the tutor for one-on-one attention.
- Reading Coach at John Muir Elementary School. The Reading Coach provides one-on-one or small group tutoring for students who are below grade level in reading. S/he gives targeted instruction in phonics, fluency, comprehension, and writing. Volunteers receive support from program coordinator and teachers in how to conduct simple exercises that focus on the above areas of reading and development
- Homework Tutor at the New Traditions After School Program. The after school Homework Tutor volunteer assists K-5th grade children during the homework session of the afterschool program. M-Th, 4:30-5:15PM. Minimum of one shift per week./prefer to have commit of same day per week.
- Homework Tutor or Enrichment Assistant at the Dr. Cobb Afterschool Learning Program. The Homework Tutor assists K-3rd graders with needed support in completing daily homework (1:2 ratio), supplemental work or acts as a reading buddy to a small group of children. Enrichment Assistants wrok along program staff in facilitating enrichment activities during program time. Each placement offers great opporrtunities for volunteer to developing new or existing skills while working with children under the guidance of credentialed staff.
Fitness/Wellness Classes
Certified individuals are needed to teach group exercise classes as well as work as fitness trainers.
- Instructor for Group Exercise:The group exercise class instructor participates in the development of an all-around fitness program including goal setting, proper use of equipment, and the knowledge necessary to enable the participant to progress safely in his or her program.
Volunteer Instructor Qualifications:
- Minimum of three (3) months experience as group class instructor or equivalent basic principles. Must maintain current CPR/AED and first aid status. Must also maintain recognized YMCA Certification or equivalent within six (6) months of beginning instruction.
- Ability and desire to interact with participants and staff in a supportive and professional manner.
- Desire to initiate, support and implement new programs that will benefit the fitness participants, the staff, and the YMCA movement.
Volunteer Instructor Job Responsibilities:
- Assist participants in developing personal fitness programs based on analysis of participants’ goals and on established YMCA principles.
- Check on the progress of participants and monitor them to insure their safety.
- Communicate in a positive manner with all individuals – staff and members alike.
- Advise participants on the proper and efficient use of equipment/machines.
- Maintain cleanliness and function of equipment, machines and fitness rooms/areas.
Strong Communities Campaign
Volunteers work with staff and the Board of Managers as fundraisers for our programs.
Policy Volunteers
As a member of the Board of Managers, committed and talented people who have the time and passion to assist in our mission of building strong kids, strong families, and strong communities are needed.
Note: All volunteers working with the YMCA of San Francisco are considered to have supervisory or disciplinary action relationships over minors. Fingerprints will be taken upon commencement of volunteer job assignment and will be submitted to the YMCA of San Francisco Association Office human resources department prior to beginning the first day of work. Volunteers may be rechecked every two years.
