All levels of Shape-Up will include pre and post fitness assessments and body composition tests. If a participant completes one level and either graduates from the entire program or decides not to continue with the program, the participant will be offered another fitness assessment and body composition test three months after they have left the program.
Level 1
In this beginning level of the program, participants will meet weekly as a group to workout, discuss goals and barriers, track progress and support each other's progress. Focus on introductory levels of physiology/anatomy, cardiovascular endurance, full body strength training, flexibility and proper basic nutrition. Various workouts covered each week, including walking/speed walking/jogging, swimming and strength exercises.
Level 2
After graduating from Level 1 Shape-Up, participants will be encouraged to move on to the intermediate level. Focus is on physical breakthroughs and setting goals that seemed to be unachievable before joining the Shape-Up program. Various workouts to include outdoor and treadmill jogging/running (if applicable), interval training, and swimming stroke development.
Level 3
In this advanced level of Shape-Up, participants will be encouraged to sign up for a race, club or competition. Focus is on mental aspects of competition and other physical breakthroughs the body goes through at a higher intensity of training. Participants will be encouraged to hold themselves accountable for their own trainings and workouts. The group will meet to support each other in their efforts, but not as often as levels one and two. Each participant will be linked to either a Shape-Up instructor or Wellness Coach and will touch base weekly.
Youth Shape-Up
In this 12 week program, youth aged 7-13 meet weekly as a group to track progress, discuss goals, workout and support each other's efforts. A major component of this program is to empower and build self-esteem of youth so that they are able to make healthier choices by eating better, avoiding risky behavior, exercising regularly and caring about the choices they make. Classes offered twice a week, attend one or both.
Locations and Times: Thursdays 5:30-6:30 PM, and Saturdays 9:30-10:30 AM at the Marin YMCA. For more information contact Louise Chang at 414-446-2152.
