A summer camp counselor position is more than just a summer job. It's the toughest job you'll ever love. You will receive extensive group work training, and you will have hundreds of hours of experience working with youth, but that's not the most important thing. Camp Jones Gulch is a community filled with tradition and warmth and the friendships that develop here often last a lifetime.

    ON THE JOB

Counselors at Camp Jones Gulch live in cabins with 10-12 campers and at least one other counselor. Cabin counselors bring the campers to their activities and help out, while program counselors run the programs. In addition, all counselors lead their cabins in cabin cleanup, meals, campfires, overnights and other all-camp activities. Throughout each one-week session, counselors act as parent and friend for their campers, with lots of opportunity to have a positive impact in their lives. We work from Sunday noon to Saturday noon, with a 24-hour break.

During the counselors' day off they are within an hour of San Francisco, Santa Cruz and San Jose, and just a few minutes from the ocean. Twice each summer we have all-staff trips. Every staff member will have at least two hours off each day either in the afternoon or evenings. During our week-long break at the end of July staff can either travel for the week or work for our Group Services Department.

Some counselors will be invited to come six weeks before camp and stay one week after summer camp, as Jones Gulch is also a site for a variety of ouside groups. Many of these groups take advantage of our recreational programs, such as swimming, horseback riding, caneoeing, the zip line and the climbing tower.
